The Hartzview Story
Family, love & good soil ALL flourish together.
a wedding gift that created a family legacy.
Hartzview Vineyard was established in 1988 by Rob and Anthea Patterson. Set amidst 125 acres of stunning natural beauty at Gardners Bay, the property was originally purchased by Rob’s late mother, June (Audie) Patterson, in 1976.
As a heartfelt wedding gift, Audie gifted Rob and Anthea a piece of the land, prompting their move from bustling Sydney to the tranquil, unspoiled landscapes of southern Tasmania, where they began their life and family together.
In the early 1980s, Hartzview was still a thriving fruit farm, renowned for producing a significant share of Australia’s gooseberries. Inspired by the potential of the land and Tasmania’s cool climate, Rob explored the idea of planting grapevines. After extensive site and soil testing, it was discovered that Hartzview shared characteristics with the famed French regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux – making it an ideal location for cultivating Pinot Noir.
In 1988, Hartzview’s first Pinot Noir vines were lovingly planted, marking the beginning of a new chapter in this picturesque corner of Tasmania.
Built in 1934, the Heritage listed Fruit Picker’s huts are still onsite at Hartzview.
Our first Pinot Noir grape cuttings begin a new chapter in 1988.

A family tip to France turns into a new business...
A passion for fortified wine production was sparked during a family holiday to Burgundy, France. Using innovative winemaking techniques and 100% natural Tasmanian fruit, their fortified wines are preservative-free, with no artificial flavours or colourings.
